LACASA's GLOW Initiative
Livingston County will be illuminated in purple lights when LACASA Center launches its community-wide Glow awareness campaign in October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. A Glow Gathering will kick-off LACASA’s awareness activities on Friday, Sept. 29, at the Brighton Millpond in downtown Brighton.
Throughout October, area businesses and residents are invited to display purple lights on store fronts and home fronts along with awareness yard signs. String lights and yard signs are available for a nominal donation at the LACASA Collection, LACASA Center’s charity resale store in Howell. Purple is the cause color for domestic violence.
LACASA’s Glow Gathering will be held on September 29 from 7 – 8 p.m. at the Brighton Millpond and Amphitheater. The public is invited to participate in this free event, which will feature shared voices, music and movement to honor the courage of survivors and remember victims who have lost their lives to domestic violence.
“This annual event provides a way for members of the community to show support for victims, survivors, and their families,” said Kayla Grant, LACASA’s Director of Social Change Advocacy. “We encourage area residents to join us in raising awareness about domestic violence by attending our Glow Gathering and by displaying purple lights in October.”
Funds raised from purple light donations at the LACASA Collection benefit domestic violence survivors at LACASA Center.
LACASA is an independent, locally-based nonprofit that helps victims of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault. The agency also provides educational programs throughout the community to raise public awareness and help prevent abuse.

Livingston County Genealogical Society Meeting
The Livingston County Genealogical Society will meet via zoom, October 5, 2023 – Hidden in Plain Sight: Polish Immigrants and the Ellis Island Database
Patricia Yokum – Patricia B. Yocum is librarian emerita at the University of Michigan. A native of New York, she earned a B.A. from Binghamton University, and M.A. and A.M.L.S. from the University of Michigan. Her interest in family history dates from her childhood, fostered by stories of her grandparents’ immigration from Poland. Between 1870 and 1914 well over 2 million Poles came to America settling largely in the northern states where work and land were plentiful. Most Poles came through Ellis Island but finding them in the Ellis Island database can be difficult. Language, history, and record handling are all factors which can thwart our searches. In this talk we’ll look at how these factors function, how they can cause information to be hidden and, most importantly, how we can work around such snags to find the immigrants we’re researching. This program will also be helpful in your research into other ethnic groups coming through Ellis Island.
. A link to this virtual meeting may be found on our Facebook page for the Livingston County Genealogical Society a few days before the October 5th meeting. All are welcome.

No questions asked. Put pills in a zip lock bag, they can be mixed together. We prefer not to have the medicine container. Keep liquid medications separate. Dump into a zip lock bag with enough paper towel to soak up the liquid. Needles must be the proper disposal container, either purchased from a pharmacy or use a plastic laundry detergent bottle. Reseal the bottle and tape it. Do your part to keep medications from being abused. Do not flush unused medication. The Big Red Barrel Project is part of Livingston County Community Alliance.
