Howell backup center Gabby Fischhaber could start for any team that the Highlanders play against.
She doesn’t play much because she sits behind McDonalds All American Lilly Williams who is an elite player because of her drive, offense and shot blocking ability. Don’t take my word for it about Fischhaber, a 6-foot-1 backup center and bundle of energy.
Let’s hear from Williams who says battling against Fischhaber in practice is fun and challenging.
Can she start for any team the Highlanders (23-1) play against?
“One hundred percent,” Williams said. “Yeah.”
Fischhaber, a junior, was expected to start this season until rumors persisted that Williams, a Michigan State commit, was considering enrolling at Howell after three years of home schooling. Fischhaber did not consider the move as a lost opportunity. She saw it as a net gain. She would learn from Williams and get better.
“Absolutely not. Are you kidding,” Fischhaber said when asked if she were upset that Williams took her starting spot.
Fischhaber gets small when she attacks the baseline. Then gets big again when she explodes to the basket. Her shot blocking has improved playing against Williams and she has learned to use her hands when attacking her in the post.
If I were the coach of a Division II or Division III team I’d give Fischhaber a call to see if she’d be interested in playing beyond high school.
“I just love the way she works,” Williams said. “Every drill we are banging off of each other. It is really fun. She is a great teammate and I’m really proud of her.”
