Two seasons ago our weekly WHMI radio journey took us to Fenton High School where we witnessed the always thrilling Linden-Fenton boys basketball games.
What wasn’t so pretty was the warmup game where the Fenton girls made every attempt to walk and chew gum at the same time. It was ugly basketball as the Fenton girls were overwhelmed by full-court presses and half court traps.
You could tell they were young and confused.
Fenton finished 3-21 that season and fell in a three-way tie for last place in the Flint Metro League Stripes Division with Flint Kearsley and Holly at 2-8.
Fenton girls basketball is worth watching now. The Tigers own a half-game lead over nemesis Linden in a fierce battle for first place in the Flint Metro League Stripes Division.
During the down times a fresh, new bright light was getting her sea legs that season. Freshman Lucy Weber showed signs of greatness and leadership. A year later she was named to the Student Advisory Council, a MHSAA sanctioned committee that makes recommendations to improve high school sports.
Now Weber is a junior and helps out on and off the court. Fenton (8-5 overall, 5-1 in conference play) may not be great yet, but the Tigers making waves.
The next step is beating Linden in a showdown game next week. It is a team that has beaten Fenton in 10 consecutive games.
Weber is a star in the making, but she is no one woman show. Fenton has won tight games because the girls are more composed than in previous seasons. In a recent one-point win over Flushing Alyssa Yurk and Charlei Peabody made big plays down the stretch along with Weber.
Fenton beat Lake Fenton 62-53 in overtime heading into Friday’s game against Holly.
