This is where panic would usually set in for the South Lyon Lions basketball team.
They were ahead by three points in the waning seconds of a hotly contested Lakes Valley Conference game with Milford. The Mavericks pulled off a miracle three-point shot before the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
Normally the Lions would fold. Not this time. They scored the first six points of overtime and beat Milford 57-51.
“I told them we have been there before,” said Coach David Gilbert.
Gilbert demanded better results and his team responded.
South Lyon (6-5 in league play) is probably too far back to oust first place Walled Lake Central (10-0) in the Lakes Valley race. However, the Lions are one of the most dangerous teams in the league.
They are healthy now and getting elite play from junior forward Graham Braun, who scored 25 points against the Mavericks, and pesky guards Braden Fox and Aiden Robinson.
The Lions (7-10 overall) are no longer a MASH unit and improved health has guided them to a two-game winning streak and wins in five of seven games. One of the losses was to second place Waterford Mott, but Mott needed to sweat before finally pulling away in the final minutes.
“I feel like we are coming into our own now,” Gilbert said. “Being healthy makes a world of difference.”
South Lyon followed up the Milford win with an easy 73-49 victory over Walled Lake Western (2-13, 0-10) who remains winless in league play.

## Lake Fenton boy’s basketball team put an emphasis on defense and its paying off. LF shook up the Flint Metro League with a stunning 66-65 victory over Fenton Tuesday night.
The win is even more significant because Fenton’s second leading scorer Sam Dillard II returned from injury. And Ja’Hion Bond recently passed 1,000 points scored for his career.
