This is my first season of viewing WHMI basketball and I already have a favorite girls’ basketball player. She is Mary Copple of Brighton who is not only a good basketball player, but plays with a tad bit of anger.
You don’t want to mess with her on the court. She also finished the season with a bang. She blitzed Grand Ledge for 28 points and during a 54-45 victory over Belleville tallied 27 points to finish with 1,000 career points.
Copple is someone opponents game plan for. During a recent game with Howell, the Howell girls knew they could not win the game unless they cooled Copple down. She can create her own shots, which everybody in high school cannot do. Even when she misses she is able to maneuver for a clean look.

HOWELL FRESHMAN DEVELOPS ALL AROUND GAME

** Howell freshman Gabby Piepho does more than hit free throws. He can also take over games by hitting three-point shots.
She hit five three-point shots during a 17-point third quarter shooting spree that sparked the Highlanders to a 45-37 victory over Livonia Stevenson earlier this week. Piepho is on a joy ride, enjoying her newfound fame as a varsity member of the team.
She first got noticed by hitting 47 consecutive free throws. Now she is known for her all-around game. She helped Howell (16-6 overall, 9-5 in conference play) to a fourth-place finish in the KLAA West Division.

SPECTACULAR SHOW

Guards Sam Dillard and Ja’Hion Bond are not the only reasons to go to a Fenton boys’ basketball game.
The pre-game and half time shows prior to the Tigers game against Linden were the best high school entertainment I’ve ever seen at a high school game.
It began when two students, strumming on their guitars, gave a Jimmy Hendrix style rendition of the Star Bangled Banner. They deserved and received a standing ovation from the student body.
Half time featured drums and xylophones during an entertaining jingle. But a policeman stole the show. He stopped the dance team in mid performance and joined them in their dance routine. My guess is he was not an actual policeman because he knew the routine just as well as the girls.
