In softball, Howell won four games and had a tie in a tournament at Waterford Kettering over the weekend. The Highlanders beat Riverview 8-2 in the opener on Saturday. Jane Anderson struck out 14 in six innings for Howell. The Highlanders then routed Lakeland 13-1 and played to a scoreless tie with New Boston Huron. On Sunday, Avrey Wolverton homered and struck out 15 in a 4-0 win over Escanaba. Howell beat Allen Park 4-3 thanks in part to Natalie Savage, who homered among three hits and drove in three runs. Elsewhere on Saturday, Brighton was swept by Greenville, 14-0 and 8-4.

In baseball, Hartland split a Saturday doubleheader with Saline, losing the first game 8-2 and winning the nightcap 4-0 behind the pitching of Jake Wohlfert, who tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10. Aiden Rockel homered and drove in three runs for the Eagles. Howell downed Riverview on Saturday 11-4. Justin Millitello homered for the Highlanders. In their second game, the Highlanders scored seven runs in the sixth inning to beat Ypsilanti Lincoln 10-5.

In softball, Fowlerville took a pair from Williamston on Friday. The Gladiators held off Williamston 8-7 in the first game, despite two runs by the Hornets in the bottom of the seventh, then rolled to an 11-1 win in the nightcap. Tori Briggs homered and tripled for the Gladiators in the opener after hitting four homers on thursday. Parker Douglass and Morgan Byerle homered in the nightcap for Fowlerville. The Gladiators baseball team had a tougher time of it, losing the opener to the Hornets 1-0 on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the ninth. James Anderson went all the way for the Gladiators, allowing just four hits. Fowlerville lost the nightcap 4-3 on a walk-off single by Holden Burkholder in the bottom of the seventh, which capped a three-run rally by Williamston.

Hartland distance runner Riley Hough had a good day at the KLAA boys track meet at Livonia Stevenson on Saturday. He set a school record in the 1,600 and a meet record in the 3,200. Howell high jumper August Johanningsmeier, who took up the sport for the first time this spring, won the high jump for Howell. Novi won the meet with 125 points, Hartland was sixth Brighton was eighth and Howell finished in 13th place.

At the KLAA girls track meet at Novi on Friday, three area school records fell in the meet, which Northville won, Kijsa Gifford became the first Brighton pole vaulter to clear 10 feet, winning with a vault of 10 fee, three inches. Hartland’s Emmy Sergeant set a school record of 26.1 seconds in a preliminary heat in that event, while Howell’s Mackenzie Wright broke her own record in the 3,200. Brighton sprinter Brooke Gray won both the 100 and 200 and ran on the winning 400 and 800 relays. Brighton finished second in the steam standings, while Hartland was fourth and Howell fifth. The boys meet will be held today at Livonia Stevenson.

Pinckney freshman Cece Thorington won the 1,600 at Friday’s SEC White Division meet at Lincoln, which is remarkable because she spends most of her time on the Pirates softball team, where she is having a standout season. The girls finished third overall, behind Dexter and Chelsea. The Pinckney boys won the division meet, led by Dylan Reason and Gavin White. Reason won the 200, the 400 and was on two winning relays. White won the 1,600 and 3,200 and was on the winning 3,200 relay.
