The Michigan High School Athletic Association has suspended its postseason tournaments for the time being due to concerns about the coronavirus, effective immediately.

The decision means that state meets in swimming and gymnastics and state tournaments in basketball and hockey won't be held this weekend. Among the teams affected are the Brighton and Hartland girls basketball teams and the Hartland and Howell hockey teams.

"Based on the events of the last 48 hours and with things changing by the minute, we believe we have no choice but to suspend our winter tournaments immediately,” MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl said. “This is a suspension until we have a better handle on the situation. The health and welfare of everyone involved is our number one priority.”

No timetable for possible rescheduling of tournaments has been announced.
