A National Guard member was shot in the leg on Sunday night, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said early on Monday.

The suspect was also shot, he noted.

"So both have gunshot wounds," he said, "the National Guard member and the suspect."

Both of the individuals are expected to live, police chief said.

The violent episode unfolded as National Guard members attempted to intervene to end a fight, he noted.

Carroll indicated that there were about seven or eight National Guard members in a van who exited the vehicle due to the fight.

Three National Guard members "discharged firearms," during the incident, he noted.
