Officials in Maryland announced Monday afternoon that a shooting occurred inside a high school, with one student confirmed to have been shot.

The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) said the incident unfolded at Thomas S. Wootton High School, a top-performing school in one of the wealthiest counties in the country.

Police identified the suspect as a student, who was arrested near campus shortly after the shooting.

"MCPD dispatched at 2:15 p.m., for the preliminary report of shots fired near Thomas S. Wootton High School," MCPD said.

Wootton High School, located in a suburb northwest of Washington, D.C., was placed under lockdown as additional officials responded to the scene.

Officers reportedly found one student with a single gunshot wound in the school hallway. The victim was then transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition, according to officials.

Following the arrest of the student suspect, police said, "at this time, there is no further threat to public safety."

"All students who ride a bus will take their regular routes home. Parents of bus riders are asked not to come to the school," MCPD said.

"Reunification for non-bus riders will be shared shortly."

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) of Baltimore said they will assist the MCPD with the investigation.

Wootton High School is a public school in Rockville, Maryland, and is widely regarded as one of the top academic high schools in the state and the U.S., according to the school's website.
