A hiker made a grim discovery on a Georgia mountain Wednesday, finding the remains of two people in a case that has drawn state investigators and left key questions about the deaths unanswered.
The remains were found on Mount Yonah in White County at about 11:20 a.m. on Sept. 9, according to the White County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's investigators and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources responded to the mountain after the discovery.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Region 8 Crime Scene Unit was later called to help examine the scene.
Few other details have been released.
The sheriff's office has not identified the two people or said how they died. Their ages and genders also have not been released, and it is unclear how long their remains had been on the mountain.
The sheriff's office has not said whether foul play is suspected.
The investigation remained ongoing Wednesday, with Sheriff Rick Kelley saying his office would provide more information as it becomes available.
"We don’t have any additional information yet," Kelley told Fox News Digital via email. "This case is very active. We are working on trying to identify the remains."
Fox News Digital also reached out to the county coroner for more information but did not immediately hear back.
Mount Yonah is in northeast Georgia, near the cities of Helen and Cleveland, and is a popular destination for hikers.
