A charity golf outing in South Lyon later this month aims to raise both funds, and awareness of cancer. Organizer Alyssa Olson is putting it together for her mother Shelly, who was recently diagnosed with a form of rectal cancer.

"It was crazy when I first saw the few bills that came after the first few scans, even just trying to figure out that she had it, it was already over $9,000. So that was insane," Olson told WHMI News.

The Swing for Shelly outing is scheduled July 20th at Tanglewood Golf Course. July 13 is the cutoff to sign up for golf ($150 per) or dinner ($35).

"You can also just come to the raffle portion," says Olson. "There will be a bar, so you can get some drinks, socialize and mingle. Hopefully, she (Shelly) will be starting to feel better by then, and stand about and talk with everyone."

Even if you cannot attend the outing or dinner, Olson says there are multiple ways to help.

"We are offering hole sponsorships for $150. We're also looking for companies to sponsor a gift for the raffle," she added. "Maybe some bigger purchases like a big cooler or electronics."
