It’s summer reading season at local libraries.
The Pinckney Community Public Library is kicking off its “Color Our World” Youth Summer Reading Program on Monday.
Library Director Hope Siasoco told WHMI with school being out, most of the focus for libraries locally and nationwide at this time is summer reading and they want to encourage people to read and keep up with their literacy skills. She noted that over time it’s grown and is no longer just a youth program but incorporates lifelong learning for all ages.
Online registration for the Youth Summer Reading Program is open now and encouraged. That component tracks reading habits and after certain goals are met, participants can come in for prizes. However, Siasoco said that also encourages them to come in to the library and see what all else is happening – as libraries are more than just books and they they have a large variety of programs and activities.
Some of the more popular include a “Children’s Concert – Music at the Blissful with Evan Haller” on Friday, June 27th; as well as the “Magic of Reading with Baffling Bill the Magician and Gus the Bunny” on Wednesday, July 9th.
The Library is also debuting a new online journaling program called “With Love”. It’s free and is a digital pen-pal letter writing app for kids and families. Siasoco said while the focus is on children, it’s been discovered that it’s also being used by teens and senior citizens. She said it’s not only great for literacy but mental health and improving communication skills – and technology skills for older individuals.
