Some Michigan adults will have an alternative way to take the written driver’s test.
It was announced on Wednesday that eligible adults can now take the written driver’s license knowledge test online. Passing the test is the first step to receive a temporary permit.
The online test is the same that is currently administered on the computer kiosks at the Secretary of State branches. It is available in multiple languages, along with an audio option.
Ohio, Wisconsin, Colorado and California also offer an online test.
“Government should work for the people, meeting Michiganders where they are and providing convenient service that fits into their daily lives,” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said. “Since 2019, our department has more than doubled the number of services available online, and now most visitors to our branches are in and out in 20 minutes or less. The new online driver’s license testing option is just the latest example of our work to make our services more accessible, efficient and convenient for the people of Michigan.”
The online test includes a multiple-choice portion and a road sign portion.
Eligible Michigan residents must be 18-years-old and over and must verify proof of identity with a Social Security number or proof of legal presence. There is also a $6.50 convenience fee. Test-takers will also need to have an operating webcam to verify their identity throughout the test. “Cheating will not be tolerated and those with infractions can be disqualified.”
Applicants can take the test up to two times per calendar day, and will need to pay the fee each time. If they pass one section and fail the other, they can visit a branch office to complete the test with no charge.
Test-takers who pass and pay the online registration fee will still need to stop into a branch office to receive their permit. Staff will verify the applicant’s qualifications and issue the permit for a $25 fee.
Permit drivers can practice under the supervision of a licensed adult. The driving skills test can be taken 30 days after receiving the permit. Drivers who pass the driving test can print their temporary license from Michigan Department of State e-Services until their license is processed and mailed to their home address.
Permits are valid for six months. Adults who pass their road test before the permit expires will receive their driver’s license free of charge.
