A situation involving a barricaded suspect and a large police presence in a residential area ended peacefully this afternoon in Northfield Township.

Police Chief Martin Smith advised the community that the situation has been resolved peacefully and one subject is in custody.

Smith earlier stated that the situation started around 3am when officers responded to a report of domestic disturbance near 6 Mile and Main Street – with the initial call describing a female being forcibly placed into a vehicle by a male suspect.

Smith said officers identified the 36-year-old male resident and proceeded to his residence.

Upon arrival, police made contact with both the male and female.

Smith said after brief negotiations, she exited and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. He said the man refused to exit and subsequently barricaded himself inside.

That stand-off situation is believed to have started around 4:30am in the 8500 block of Nollar Road.

Smith said assistance was requested from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team and Tactical unit to secure the area, and there was no threat to public safety.

The update advising the situation was peacefully resolved was issued before 3:30pm.
