The leader of a local camp for children battling serious health challenges and their families has been named one of Crain’s Detroit Business 2025 Notable Leaders in Philanthropy.

Chief Executive Officer J.J. Lewis received the honor.

North Star Reach provides life-changing, year-round programs at camp and remotely for children with serious health challenges and medical conditions, and their families, free of charge. The camp sits on 105-acres located off Patterson Lake Road, just past Hell in Putnam Township. North Star Reach is the ninth U.S. residential camp in the SeriousFun Children’s Network founded by actor and philanthropist Paul Newman.

The annual recognition honors leaders across Southeast Michigan who are making a transformative impact through strategic innovation, service, and a deep commitment to advancing equity and strengthening communities.

Since stepping into his role in 2024, Lewis has led “a bold and compassionate relaunch of North Star Reach’s programming and philanthropic efforts”.

In collaboration with the Board of Directors and staff, Lewis has helped restore Family Camp Weekends and laid the groundwork for launching the OutReach Program, which will extend North Star Reach’s impact into hospitals and communities across Michigan. His leadership has also reignited donor and volunteer engagement through new partnerships, storytelling campaigns, and community events. With an emphasis on belonging and joy, Lewis has helped secure major gifts, increased corporate and foundation support, and inspired hundreds to get involved in making camp magic happen.

Lewis said “I’m deeply honored to be recognized alongside so many incredible philanthropic leaders. This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of our team, board, volunteers, and Campily—our camp family—who believe in the healing power of connection. Together, we’re building a more inclusive, joyful, and equitable future for children and families navigating serious medical journeys.”

Beyond his role at North Star Reach, Lewis actively serves on several nonprofit boards, including the Association of Fundraising Professionals – West Michigan Chapter (President-Elect and Chair of the National Philanthropy Day Planning Committee), the Central Michigan University Alumni Association (Chair of the Scholarship Committee), the Rotary Club of Howell (President Nominee and Secretary-Elect), and the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation Board of Trustees (Chair of the Grants & Scholarships Committee). His work across these organizations is grounded in the belief that strong communities are built through shared purpose, service, and hope.

North Star Reach Board of Directors Chair Sheri Mark said “J.J. brings a unique combination of heart and strategy to every space he enters. His leadership has not only strengthened North Star Reach—it’s reignited a powerful vision for what’s possible when we work together to serve children and families.”
