The Humane Society of Huron Valley is hosting the free virtual event “Co-existing with Coyotes.”

Organizers said the event is designed to help residents learn how to live with the animals as suburban and urban sightings are becoming more frequent.

Karin Saucedo, Texas State Director of Project Coyote, is leading the discussion and seminar. She will talk about their behavior and feeding patterns, what people have seen in urban settings and how to humanely coexist with them if they’re in your neighborhood.

“As human development continues to expand and take over wildlife habitat, it’s important we understand the animals whose land we’ve taken over,” Tanya Hilgendorf, President and CEO of HSHV, said. “By fragmenting and destroying natural habitats, we’ve made adaptable animals like coyotes our neighbors.”

The event is part of the organization’s ongoing mission to community education and protection of wildlife. They said the seminar will have information for everyone, regardless of whether they’ve come into contact with coyotes.

Attendees will be able to ask questions and participate in discussions about living safely with coyotes in their communities.

“There’s a lot of fear and myth surrounding coyotes,” Hilgendorf said. “It’s completely natural to feel unease about animals we don’t fully understand. That’s why community education is so important – with knowledge, we can begin to appreciate the vital role coyotes play and see the beauty and resilience of our wild neighbors. Coyotes are highly intelligent and social animals who live in close-knit family groups. But love them or not, urban wildlife is part of our shared environment. Learning to coexist peacefully isn’t just compassionate – it’s essential for the health of both our communities and our ecosystems. With a better understanding – and just a few simple changes – we can reduce conflict and foster a more respectful relationship with these remarkable creatures.”

Co-existing with Coyotes is June 17 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. It will be held on Microsoft Teams. The registration link is below.
