Matt Maasdam, a retired Navy SEAL, announced his candidacy for Michigan’s Seventh Congressional District on Tuesday.
According to a release, Maasdam graduated from University of Michigan, joined the U.S. Navy, and became a Navy SEAL – serving under Presidents of both parties.
Later, he worked his way up to the White House, where he served as Military Aide to President Barack Obama, carrying the nuclear codes.
Now, Matt lives in Michigan with his wife Laura, who served as a U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, and their two sons.
If elected, Maasdam would be the first Democrat Navy SEAL to serve in the House of Representatives.

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Zach Bannon issued the following response:
"Ann Arbor Matt Maasdam is yet another out of touch Democrat to parachute into the messy, expensive race to the left Democrat primary. While Maasdam, (Bridget) Brink, (Michael) Smeltzer and (Muhammad) Salman Rais push their far-left agenda, Congressman Tom Barrett continues to deliver commonsense results and will defeat whichever radical Democrat emerges from the messy Democrat primary."
