A former Ann Arbor Concordia University women’s basketball coach is joining Cleary University as its new women’s basketball coach.

Elyse Schlump was Concordia’s head coach for three seasons. According to the press release, she had a 51-37 record and a 42-20 record in the WHAC. The Concordia Cardinals were in the WHAC semifinals in the 2023-24 season and the quarterfinals the other two seasons.

She also coached five student athletes named First Team All WHAC, two named Second Team All WHAC and three named WHAC All-Freshman Team.

“We are thrilled to welcome Elyse as our new head coach,” Max Ballinger, Director of Athletics for Cleary, said. “Her passion for developing student athletes, combined with her years of experience and proven success, make her an incredible fit for Cleary. Elyse’s energy, leadership and dedication to her players are exactly what we were looking for.”

Schlump played basketball at Concordia for four seasons as an undergraduate student and served as a graduate assistant for the women’s basketball team.

Prior to joining Concordia, she was an associate head coach at NCAA D3 Skidmore College then became the Director of Basketball Operations at NCAA D1 Marist University, both located in New York.

“I’m incredibly grateful and excited for the opportunity to lead such a talented group of young women both on and off the court,” Schlump said. “I look forward to being part of the Cleary community and working together to continue elevating the women’s basketball program.”

Schlump is replacing Kevin Mondro, who was hired in the fall of 202 and served as the first women’s basketball coach at Cleary. Cleary didn’t have a men’s or women’s basketball team before that season and began playing competitively during the 2023-24 season. Mondro accepted an assistant coach position at the University of Detroit Mercy.
