Brighton High School is hosting its first annual Unified Sports camp Thursday. It involves 120 students in grades JK through 8.
"The whole premise behind it is pairing students with disabilities and students without disabilities on the same team to compete and train together," special education teacher Jody Renicker told WHMI's Morning Drive with Chuck and Madison.
"It's just a natural path to understanding friendship and respect.
Renicker said back in 2018, Brighton High School was named one of the top five Unified Champion Schools in the U.S. by ESPN.
"It really has changed the culture at the high school," she said. "It promotes inclusion, respect and understanding. Sports has a way of bringing people together. I really can't say enough about it."
Renicker offered a special thank you to the BHS Class of 2025, saying their generous donation made this camp possible, and they leave behind a lasting legacy of inclusion for our future Bulldogs.
