With increased community need and many individuals and families struggling through tough times, there’s some help on the horizon for the upcoming holiday season.
Those in need can sign-up for Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance through the Salvation Army of Livingston County this week.
Lt. Robert Leach said they’re looking at increased need, particularly with Christmas coming up. He said last year there was a big jump over previous years and they’re expecting the same again this year.
The Salvation Army was among the beneficiaries of the first-ever WHMI Cares Radiothon, which will aid the local Corps in its mission of helping those most in need.
Leach noted they’re seeing a lot more families needing help keeping a roof over their heads; but sadly, a lot more families needing a roof over their heads – saying families are being hit really hard.
Leach stressed that all funds raised in Livingston County stay local and donations really go a long way.
When it comes to asking for help, don’t be too proud.
Leach said “Absolutely not. If you need help, get help and don’t put it off – no one will shame you for it…we’ll walk alongside you and try to get you back up on your feet”.
Leach said they’ll have three sign-up days in October for Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance – this Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the Corp’s 503 Lake Street location in Howell.
There will be two additional dates in November. People should bring proof of Livingston County residency, and an I.D. for every person in the household.
As the holiday season approaches, volunteers are always needed in a number of different capacities. Visit the Salvation Army Livingston County website and click on “volunteering”.
Bell-ringing is expected to start November 15th, and will go through Christmas Eve. Leach said last year, Kroger was nice enough to let them ring the week between Christmas and New Year’s so hopefully they can do that again.
Leach commented there is a big need for bellringers, either in two-hour shifts or extended periods of time. Both individuals and groups are welcome. Online sign-ups can be done at www.registertoring.
WHMI staff will be out manning the Red Kettles at the Howell Walmart on Wednesday, December 10th.
