Livingston County residents and businesses are encouraged to turn the county purple in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
LACASA will launch the observance with the annual GLOW Gathering this Wednesday, October 1st at 7pm at The AMP at the Millpond in downtown Brighton.
The GLOW Gathering is a free event featuring speakers from LACASA, a survivor testimonial, music from the Livingston Chorale, and a poetry reading to honor the courage of survivors and remember victims who have lost their lives to domestic violence.
Livingston County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Christina Richards will also share thoughts on the legal issues and challenges surrounding domestic violence.
Guests are encouraged to wear purple as a show of support and to incorporate purple displays and lights in their homes and businesses. Purple is recognized as the official color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
LACASA Director of Social Change Advocacy Sara Lewis “We want to send a clear message to survivors that they are not alone, and we want our community to unite in creating a future where everyone can live safely and with dignity. Together, we can shed light on this critical issue and empower those most in need of our support.”
According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, roughly 1 in 4 women (24.3%) and 1 in 7 men (13.8%) over the age of 18 have been the victim of severe intimate partner violence in their lifetime – over 12 million individuals in a single year.
LACASA is a locally-based nonprofit helps victims and survivors of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual violence. It also provides critical education programs to increase public awareness and prevent interpersonal violence in the community.
