Genoa Township trustees vote to create a special assessment roll for road repairs in the Genoa Estates neighborhood, despite some objections by residents, who now face an additional $700 or more per year on top of their property taxes, over the next decade.
"I've been off the last two months. I'm self-employed. Knee surgery. I don't have the finances to have a tax hike," said one resident.
"I'm just wondering, what do you do in a situation like that, when you can't afford? I've been there almost 40 years."
Residents were told they may apply for a hardship exemption with Genoa Township, but that's only for property tax bills, not the special assessment.
Others asked if a total rehab of Weatherly and Russell Drive is truly necessary.
"It's not that we can't afford it, but when I drive around the subdivision, I don't think it's that bad. I know it needs to be addressed and I know it needs to be done. And I know there are other things that can be done other than this," said another resident along Weatherly.
She was told the Livingston County Road Commission deemed the roads well beyond their 20-year lifespan. A representative previously outlined the need during an earlier public meeting.
