The Michigan State Police are on the lookout for speeders.

Speed enforcement is now underway, and MSP First District Information Officer Lt. Rene Gonzalez said drivers should know troopers are out to nab speeders.

There will be a lot of drivers on the roads, so maintaining safe speeds and avoiding distracted driving are paramount to getting to holiday destinations. He said authorities expect 2 million people to hit the roads this holiday weekend alone.

Crashes involving speed in the state have dropped, and Gonzalez said the goal is to keep that trend continuing. Active enforcement and education are both important pieces to decreasing speed-related crashes.

For people who speed, Gonzalez said it typically doesn’t take much time off the arrival time. It may save drivers a couple minutes, but the risk of a crash isn’t worth saving those minutes, he added.

Michigan is also at the height of the road construction season. Getting pulled over in a construction zone for speeding can result in double the fine and double the points on your license. Speeding also puts workers at risk.
