New signage will be going up around Northfield Township to inform drivers of “no truck routes”.
At its last meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the replacement of missing and damaged signs in an amount not to exceed $7,500 after July 1st.
The Washtenaw County Road Commission will be installing the signage.
In 2023, police officers wrote tickets for violations of the township truck route ordinance. However, the tickets were later dismissed by a magistrate due to improper signage for truck routes.
A memo from the township attorney states it was determined that there is no issue with township ordinance, but rather the numerous missing signs.
Lt. David Powell stated they have continuous complaints about commercial trucks, and basically the entire township is a “no truck” route. It was further clarified that deliveries are permitted, but it is supposed to be the most direct route.
Some locations identified with missing or old and faded signage include 5 Mile, 6 Mile, Spencer Road, Earhart, Jennings, Joy, Kearney, Nollar Road, Northfield Church Road, and East Shore Drive.
With the changes, the attorney stated the Police Department should be able to resume citing trucks in violation on roads with posted signage.
