A Brighton Township resident continues to push for backyard chicken coops, arguing it would allow families to provide for themselves, while also saving a little cash on their grocery bill.

"I feel like our laws are extremely outdated. I would just like every Brighton Township resident to be able to have the opportunity to have their own little homestead and provide for their family on their own," Kelli Delaney told WHMI News.

"Times are changing. People are turning more into growing their own food, eating clean. And providing eggs for your family without having to go the grocery store is a part of that."

Township officials have discussed a possible zoning change for backyard coops, but no formal decision has been made.

Trustees instead asked the Brighton Township Planning Commission to explore an updated ordinance.

Delaney also supports a couple of pieces of legislation on backyard coops, still working through the process in Lansing.

"House Bill 4049, also with 4050, that is an extremely lenient bill. It also has the same parameters, meaning no roosters and a certain amount of acreage," she says.

"That is asking for residents who have a quarter-acre or more, whereas right now Brighton Township is five acres, which is extremely crazy."

Both bills have been referred to the House Committee on Agriculture. No hearing has been scheduled.
