Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald is running for Michigan Attorney General.

McDonald made the announcement Tuesday. She’s a former public-school teacher and Oakland County Circuit Court Judge.

McDonald said “I’m running for Attorney General because Michigan needs a fighter. I’ve spent my entire life advocating for children and families as a teacher, judge, and prosecutor. As the People's Lawyer, I'll put Michiganders' needs first and do what it takes to protect our freedoms and keep our communities safe”.

McDonald is well known and prosecuted the Oxford High School shooting case that happened on November 30th, 2021. Their son Ethan, at the time 15 now 17, is serving a life sentence. He opened fire at the school, killing four students and injuring seven others.

During her time as a judge, McDonald presided over the first same-sex adoption in Michigan’s history.

Attorney General Dana Nessel can’t run again due to term limits. McDonald is the third Democrat to join the race. Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit and former U.S. Attorney Mark Totten earlier launched campaigns. Birmingham Attorney Kevin Kijewski is running as a Republican.
