Serious damage was done at a local cemetery by a suspected impaired driver.

The Fowlerville Police Department issued a community update on social media today.

Over the weekend, the department responded to an incident that it says has continued to generate a lot of phone calls, concern, and heartbreak across the community.

Police said “A driver made a reckless and incredibly poor decision to get behind the wheel, traveling at high rates of speed, going off the roadway, and ultimately driving through our local cemetery”.

The act caused thousands of dollars in damage to Village property and nearly 20 headstones at Greenwood Cemetery - some dating back to World War II. Many of these markers were historic and irreplaceable.

The Department said “This is a heartbreaking reminder of the damage one bad decision can cause. If you feel that you should not be behind the wheel, whether it’s because you’ve had too much to drink, used any kind of drug, or are simply too tired, don’t! Call a friend, a family member, or use a rideshare. Lives and legacies depend on it”.

The Department commented the “outstanding police work by our officers”, saying they were able to quickly identify the individual responsible and appropriate actions are being taken.

The Department added “We understand how upsetting and emotional this is for many, and we share your anger and sadness. Our department is committed to seeing this through and ensuring accountability for this senseless act. Thank you to everyone who reached out with information and support”.
