Parking Lot Dispute Continues Between Howell Twp, Post 141

A year-long dispute over parking continues between Howell Township and American Legion Post 141.
Trustees this week discussed possibly dismissing a ticket issued against the Legion after multiple letters demanding the Post remove gravel laid down in the right-of-way to expand its lot.
Officials say talks broke down once attorneys got involved, but township officials are still hoping to avoid costly litigation.
“The Legion did something they weren’t supposed to do. They did not go through the right process. You’re supposed to go through site plan review for anything that’s commercial,” said Supervisor Mike Coddington.
“If that’s a possible resolution for the Legion, I think that would be a welcomed path forward.”
A resolution dismissing the ticket was put on hold for another two weeks.
“I would actually like to see a way forward with this that is positive, so we don’t have to do this resolution,” one trustee added.
“If as a board, we start dismissing tickets simply because, then we open the door up to other things that come down the line where someone says you did it for the Legion. Why don’t you do it for X, Y, Z?”
Post 141 previously declined to comment on the matter to WHMI News.
