Communities across the listening area are kicking off summer and honoring military members by hosting Memorial Day parades and other events.

You can join WHMI’s Dan Martin at Hartland’s 90th Memorial Day parade. Dan will be in Hartland from 10 a.m. until noon. The events start Sunday at 7 p.m. with a cemetery walk to honor and remember veterans from Hartland. The band boosters are hosting a pancake breakfast on Monday from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Village Elementary. The 5K Run and 3K Walk start at 8 a.m., and a flyover featuring the B25 “Rosie’s Reply” and C-47 “Hairless Joe” is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. A moment of silence will be held right before the parade begins at noon. Milford will also have the B25 “Rosie’s Reply” and C-47 “Hairless Joe” doing a flyover Monday at 11 a.m. Military vehicles will be on display on Main Street starting at 9:30 a.m. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Post 216, with a brief ceremony and remembrance event scheduled at the parade’s ending point in Central Park. The Facebook page dedicated to the parade says they expect more than 1,000 veterans and active military members to gather in Milford for the events. The Brighton High School is the starting point for Brighton’s Memorial Day Parade, kicking off at 10 a.m. before ending at Mill Pond. There will be a ceremony held at The AMP and a wreath-laying ceremony at the Brighton Veterans Memorial. More information can be found through the Downtown Brighton Government’s Facebook page.

South Lyon’s parade will begin at 9 a.m. at Bartlett Elementary before ending at the South Lyon Cemetery for a remembrance ceremony. The South Lyon High School and South Lyon East High School bands will play traditional songs and Taps will be played. In honor of every veteran who has passed away in the last year, a balloon release will be held. The VFW Hall will host an American flag retirement ceremony and give away free hot dogs and drinks after the parade. Howell’s parade will start at 10 a.m., featuring the high school band, military vehicles, scout troops and more. Those interested in participating should meet at the American Legion at 9 a.m. Vehicles will be lining up at the library beginning at 9:30 a.m. Organizers ask that those running for any political office avoid campaigning or displaying signs promoting them as a candidate to keep the focus on honoring the fallen. A brief ceremony will be held at the Lakeview Cemetery. A free lunch is being held at the American Legion following the ceremony. Pinckney’s Memorial Day festivities will kick off at Unity Park at 11 a.m. with plenty of family friendly activities, including face painting, inflatables and food. The parade will start at 1 p.m. with veterans, color guards, classic cars and more. There will be a ceremony at the end of the route in the Pinckney Town Square, featuring words of remembrance, a rifle and the playing of Taps. More information can be found on Facebook.
