With more than one million Michiganders expected to hit the road this Memorial Day holiday weekend, MDOT continues to warn not to be roped in by the ongoing toll road texting scam.

The agency posted on social media this week "MDOT is not sending out text messages demanding toll payments. This is a scam. If you receive these kinds of messages, delete them. If you tried sending any payment info to these messages, contact your financial institution immediately."

MDOT's Bay Region spokesperson Caitlyn French says the biggest clue it's what is known as a "smishing" scam is the url address, or web link, sent with the text.

"You'll see these ones where they've spoofed our government website to make it look like it's really legit, same color, same font and everything. But if you look at the url, it goes from michigam.gov/mdot, dash x-y-z, 1-2-3, or other gibberish after that. That's a big red flag," said French.

French says that link is the scam to get your information.

"They want you to put in that credit card info, thinking well if I pay this $8, it goes away," she said. "The scam, if you put in your credit card info, well, now they have your info."

And she says it's important to make Michigan's elderly and more vulnerable aware of these threats.

"Young adults who have older parents, even teenagers who have older parents, tell your parents about what's going on. Remind the elderly you come into contact with that this really looks like a scam, you should probably delete this kind of thing."
