In some unexpected news – a couple has stepped up to help save and re-open an iconic drive-in.
Memory Lane Drive-In Theater in Monroe announced in April that it was permanently closed. Poor attendance, the availability of streaming services, and lack of concessions support were cited as the primary reasons for closing. The owners said “Memory Lane has suffered the same fate” as many drive-ins across the country.
However, there appears to have been a positive turn of events since that glum news.
A post on social media states the following:
“Who's ready to see some movies this summer at the drive-in?!
THE DRIVE-IN WILL BE OPENING SOON!!
We have worked with a local couple from Monroe since the announcement of Memory Lane closing and they are ready to light the big screen back up again. The plan is to get the drive-in up and running for Memorial Weekend for the release of Lilo and Stitch.
Stay tuned for a confirmation that everything is ready for an opening day of May 23rd. Please show them the support necessary to keep Memory Lane Drive-In around for years to come. If this message has reached you and you're not in the vicinity to support us, then please support your local drive-in as they are truly a very special part of American history and lots of fun for all ages.”
The website states that two screens will feature two films each for the upcoming opening weekend. One will have “Lilo & Stitch”, followed by “Thunderbolts”; and the other will feature “Sinners”, followed by “Clown in a Cornfield”.
The drive-in is located at 6501 North Monroe Street.
