A chemical spill and hazmat situation resulted in a road closure and delays for motorists in the Farmington Hills – Livonia area.

At around 5pm Monday, a semi was stopped on Middlebelt Road just south of Eight Mile - leaking ferric chloride out of the trailer and onto the road.

Livonia Fire & Rescue and the Farmington Hills Fire Department responded. Due to the nature of the hazard, the Western Wayne Hazardous Materials Response Team was also activated.

Hazmat technicians wore specialized hazmat suits to enter the semi-trailer and stop the leak.

Authorities said the product did not reach the sewer system and there was no danger to the public.

Clean-up continued today, and all lanes have since re-opened to traffic.
