A Michigan State Police trooper shot during a traffic stop in Detroit Friday evening has been released from the hospital.
According to a post on X, the unidentified trooper had been released, thanking medical staff at Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit for their care.
The agency said the trooper was shot while conducting a traffic stop at 7:50 p.m. Friday, on a white pickup truck on Wyoming Street, west of Highland Park.
According to investigators, a fight broke out between the 41-year-old suspect and the trooper. The suspect opened fire, striking the trooper twice in the vest and once in the shoulder.
The trooper returned fire, killing the man. The shooting remains under investigation.
“This is the second incident in a short period of time that a trooper’s vest saved his life,” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said. “We are very fortunate that the trooper, who had less than a year in the department, was able to use his training to survive this encounter with a suspect who was trying to take his life.”
Another Detroit-area trooper was shot several times on May 5 as part of a special task force investigating car thefts.
