The Arc Livingston is hoping the public can help one of their own get national recognition.

Sarah Dunkel-Jackson, Program Director of the Hockey Challenge Camp, and the program are a finalist for the NHL’s Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award presented by Discover.

In a press release, Dunkel-Jackson said she started the camp after getting feedback from the success of the HAJBA’s Baseball Challenge League, which was also started by her. The community said they would love to have more sports represented.

“The Hockey Challenge Camp gives those with unique learning and/or medical needs the opportunity to see what the game of hockey is all about.” Participants don’t need to know how to skate. They work with “hockey buddies,” peer mentors, to work on different hockey skills that are adapted for on the ice and off the ice instruction.

“It is an honor that Coach Sarah and the Hockey Challenge Camp were selected as a finalist for the NHL’s Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award presented by Discover,” Laura Sauer, Executive Director of The Arc Livingston, said. “Not only do Coach Sarah and all players, buddies and volunteers deserve the recognition, but the award funding will also help with more equipment and the capacity to expand the program. We also hope that when people watch the incredible video, they see how important accessible and inclusive sports programs are and how much our athletes with disabilities and their buddies love playing together. “

A committee of NHL and Discover executives, O’Ree and a fan vote will determine the winner. If Hockey Challenge Camp wins, officials said the funds will be donated to The Arc Livingston to support future Hockey Challenge Camp sessions and purchase equipment.

Dunkel-Jackson said money would be used to purchase hockey sleds and other adaptive equipment.
