Community members can take part in the last Lantern Hike of the season at a local rec area.

The Friends of Island Lake State Recreation Area has been hosting another year of lantern-lit hikes along part of the Hickory Ridge hiking trail, beginning in the first parking lot of the Kent Lake unit. Participants hike, snowshoe or ski and follow the lanterns for one mile to a warming station, complete with a campfire and hot chocolate. Registration is not required for the self-guided hike. Participants can hike anytime from 6-9pm this Saturday. Organizers say people should start by 8:15 to be able to enjoy the campfire and hot chocolate. The lantern hikes are scheduled to resume after the time change next fall.

Individuals are asked to refrain from using flashlights or headlamps unless required for safety. Organizers say eyes will adjust and the moderate darkness makes for a better experience for all – adding it’s no fun being blinded by oncoming lights. Island Lake Friends Facebook photo.
