Volunteers are being sought for the local Meals on Wheels program that serves local senior citizens.

The Livingston County Senior Nutrition Program is looking for volunteer drivers as well as office workers. Meals on Wheels serves a hot meal Monday through Friday to home bound seniors in all of Livingston County, as well as western Oakland County. Volunteer drivers typically pick up the meals from local senior centers in the morning between 9:30 and 10:30am. The volunteer drivers are assigned routes with roughly 10-13 stops, which typically take about an hour-and-a-half to complete. 700 seniors are served by Meals on Wheels every day, and that the social contact is often just as appreciated as the food. Outreach Director Candie Hovarter says the meal is just as important as the communication because for some, the only person they’ll see on a given day is the volunteer who delivers their meal. She added that volunteers are encouraged to chat with the seniors and many end up becoming friends with those they serve.

There is no minimum time commitment for volunteers and Hovarter says they can even use people willing to be substitutes. Details can be found through the link or by calling 810-632-2155. (JM)
