The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced Thursday its plans for winter high school sports. Those considered contact sports, including basketball, competitive cheer, hockey and wrestling may begin non-contact workouts on Saturday. The first day of contact workouts will be February 1st. Games can be played in hockey as of the first, while basketball begins on Feb. 4th and hockey and competitive cheer on Feb. 8th. District tournaments begin March 15th in all but basketball, which starts the next week. Finals will be held on March 27th in gymnastics and hockey, team wrestling finals on March 31st, individual wrestling finals on April 2nd and 3rd with girls and boys basketball the following weekend. Some schools might see their winter finals interfering with spring breaks. The MHSAA says about 63 percent of the state’ schools will be off the week of March 31st.


Hartland High School golfer Bryce Brief, expected to be one of the area’s best this spring, announced on Twitter Thursday he has signed to play at Saginaw Valley in college.

On the slopes,Brighton’s boys team won its meet at Mt. Brighton on Thursday, with Luke Vaden leading the way with a third-place finish. Ellie Williams was fourth overall for the Brighton girls, who finished third.
