Brighton guard Trevor Viau looks like he owns the place when he steps onto a basketball court for the Bulldogs.
He plays with confidence. He shoots with confidence. He passes with confidence.
Viau is also a pretty good defender which it is why it became a head scratcher as to why he did not guard Hartland’s sophomore sensation Parker Sundman during the waning seconds of Brighton’s 53-51 loss to the Eagles last weekend.
Sundman expected Viau to be on him and breathed a sigh of relief when someone else defended him. Sundman finished off the game with an up and under move and three-point play that gave Hartland the lead for good in a back and forth contest.
Viau finished with 23 points but it was not enough to propel the Bulldogs to victory. Brighton (3-7 overall and 0-3 in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association) needs a win in the worst way Friday when it plays host to Howell (7-3, 3-0) Friday (7 p.m.) which is tied with Canton for first in conference play.
The Brighton-Howell game is the WHMI-93.5 FM game of the week. Stay tuned for all the action with Dan Leach and Ryan Wooley.
INSIDE POWER IN HARTLAND
** New Hartland girls basketball coach Mike McKay emphasizes pounding the ball inside and the main beneficiary has been 6-foot senior center Aubree Meyer who averaged just 4.1 points a game last season.
It’s a different story this year. Meyer bumped her average to 15.4 point per game and became the first Eagle girl to score 30 points in a game during a 62-28 victory over Birmingham Groves last month.
On Tuesday she had 25 points and 13 rebounds in a bounce back 50-39 victory over Plymouth Salem. The win created a four way tie for second place in the KLAA West Division with along with Brighton, Howell and Salem.
